> Regarding the commentary's phrase "Sixth, explaining the latent defilements (anuśaya)": first it explains the general name, and afterwards, below "Separately, there are...", it subsumes and explains according to the treatise. Now, to begin with the first: regarding the phrase "this is only in terms of seeds," the Yogācārabhūmi, fascicle two, states: "Among the seeds present within the essential nature of all phenomena, if they are subsumed under the category of defilements, they are called both unrefined heaviness (dauṣṭhulya) and latent defilement (anuśaya). If they are subsumed under the category of heterogenous maturation (vipāka) and other non-defined categories, they are called only unrefined heaviness, not latent defilement. If they are seeds subsumed under wholesome roots such as faith, they are neither unrefined heaviness nor latent defilement. Why is that? Because when these phenomena arise, the essential nature on which they depend has only adaptability, not non-adaptability."
