> Regarding the Commentary's 'Nine: real and unreal,' etc.: the last two are in terms of persons. Regarding the Commentary's 'It also abandons the characteristics of the residual traces of the triyāna': the third fascicle of the Prajñāpāramitopadeśa says, 'Just as when fragrance is inside a vessel, though the fragrance is gone, the residual scent remains; and just as when a person is bound, when he first gains release, his body is still unhandy.' \[The story of\] Pilindavatsa scolding the goddess of the Ganges is also in the third fascicle of the treatise. Śāriputra's anger is also in the third fascicle of the treatise. It was that Śāriputra was the senior monk, and Rāhula was emaciated. The Buddha asked the reason. He spoke a verse, saying: 'If a person consumes oil, he gains strength; if he consumes ghee, he gains a fine complexion; he who consumes hemp dregs has no physical strength: the Greatly Virtuous World-Honoured One should naturally know this.' The Buddha asked, 'Who is your senior monk?' He answered, 'The preceptor Śāriputra.' The Buddha said, 'Śāriputra consumes impure food,' and ordered him to bake in the midday sun. Later \[the Buddha\] again ordered him to cease, but he refused to return, \[saying\] having already baked, it was unfitting to cease. The Buddha thereupon cited the past when he had been a snake that bit a king: a sorcerer prepared a fire pit and ordered him to suck out the venom, \[saying\] that if he did not suck it out, he must enter the fire pit. He thought to himself: 'I have already vomited it; how could I suck it back?' Thereupon he threw his body into the fire. Thus his habit of anger has not ceased even today. Mahākāśyapa dancing is in fascicle forty-seven of the Prajñāpāramitopadeśa. The rest is as in the subcommentary to the second fascicle of the Commentary. Regarding the Commentary's 'The \[chapter on\] "Comfortable Practice" in the Lotus Sūtra directs not approaching the two vehicles': the sūtra says, 'Furthermore, one should not approach or inquire after monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen who seek the śrāvaka \[vehicle\]. Whether in a room, in a place for walking meditation, or in a lecture hall, one does not reside or dwell together with them.' This means not letting one approach them. 'Fearing that the habit may form a seed' is the explanation of the Commentary.
