> In the Commentary, under “Third, activity characteristics,” the treatise also has three parts, and the Commentary also first divides dharma and meaning in general. “The activity characteristic of arising” is the name established by the treatise; next, from “Present conditions of dharmas” onward is the Commentary's explanation of the treatise's name; later, from “Supposing one knows” onward is the intention of the treatise's re-taking up and explaining. In the Commentary there are two: first, taking the general sense to explain it. The treatise's root text says: “Because each time is the present time.” From “Therefore the treatise says” onward, it clearly cites the treatise to explain, explaining the aforementioned words “each \[time\] is the present.” Second, from “Already arisen” onward is knowing meaning. First, citing the treatise; later, from “Supposing one knows” onward, the Commentary takes the sense to explain. In full, the treatise says: “Seeing the past and future times and knowing the present time constitutes the cognitive domain of that bodhisattva.” Explanation: The text of the Commentary is divided into two: first, directly taking the sense to explain; second, from “This, then” onward, concludes and indicates the two above. How does one retroactively see the past and future to know the present? Seeing that past dharmas have ceased and future dharmas have not yet arisen, one then knows that the present has arisen from the future and will certainly cease and pass away. The third and fourth can be understood.
