> In the fourth, subtle cognition, the text has three: first, repeating the sūtra to indicate the name; second, explaining the meaning from 'meaning cognition' downwards; third, following the previous to determine the basis from 'therefore the treatise' downwards. In generating practice: first cite the treatise; later, the commentary explains from 'meaning relying on the previous' downwards. Saying 'three cognitions' refers to: first, responsive emanation; second, adhiṣṭhāna; third, wholesome aggregation, which is the previous cognition of conditioned aggregation. Why they are combined: the cognition of aggregation is wisdom, and responsive emanation is compassion; compassion and wisdom unobstructed make the subtle of the Buddha. Regarding the commentary's 'not only do the eight aspects \[have this\], but one possesses the other seven': merely the single cognition of responsive emanation is capable of making the one possess all. Now each and every event possesses the three cognitions, hence making it subtle, because the Tathāgata realized this Dharma approach. Separately there are ten events, mostly identical to the eight aspects; the eight aspects do not possess the fifth, cognition of secret places. In the text there are four: first, indicating the name; second, determining the basis of arising from 'relying on guarding sense faculties' downwards; third, explaining the meaning of secret from 'manifesting coarse' downwards; fourth, explaining the text from 'the first three' downwards. The text contains many meanings; the previous commentaries have already contained them all.
