> Regarding the commentary's statement, "Dharma and non-dharma are merely conventional designations": dharma and non-dharma have three meanings. First, existent phenomena are dharma, and nonexistent phenomena are non-dharma; but as existence and nonexistence have already been refuted above, this is not the meaning here. Second, unwholesome phenomena are non-dharma, and wholesome phenomena are dharma. Third, characteristic is dharma, and nature is non-dharma. Here it encompasses these two: wholesome and unwholesome are mutually conditioned and are also conventional designations; in the dharma of dispelling characteristics, explaining nature serves as non-dharma. Since characteristics do not remain, nature cannot be established; hence "even dharma should be abandoned, how much more so non-dharma?" Nature and characteristics are mutually conditioned, and are also merely conventional designations.
