> Regarding the commentary's statement, "Next, the following four approaches of non-identity": this line is a general heading. That is, the fifth approach is non-identity because nature and characteristics contradict each other; the sixth approach is non-identity because nature and characteristics harm each other; the seventh approach simply combines the fifth and sixth approaches to clarify non-identity because contradiction and harm are different; the eighth approach also combines the fifth and sixth approaches to clarify non-identity because non-obliteration and non-preservation are different. The fifth and sixth approaches merely transpose the second approach: above, the second approach matched being unchanging against emptiness of essence, resulting in non-difference, whereas here it matches it against differentiation, resulting in non-identity. The sixth approach is likewise. In the fifth, it first directly clarifies \[this\]. The statement, "Because root and branch contradict and turn their backs on each other," means that the root is quiescent and without dual characteristics, while the branch has ten thousand differentiated modes; hence they contradict each other. In the commentary, from "The Laṅkāvatāra says" onward, citing testimony is clear. The Commentary on the Awakening of Faith says: "Herein, only arising and ceasing is the seven consciousnesses, and only non-arising and non-ceasing is the tathāgatagarbha. Once the two meanings are distinguished, the ālaya is left with no separate essence of its own; hence it says it does not exist in between. This is stated in terms of the meaning of non-duality, not in terms of non-conjunction. Why is this? Here, the non-arising and non-ceasing of the tathāgatagarbha is precisely the non-arising and non-ceasing of the arising and ceasing of the seven consciousnesses; hence it is not identical with its own arising and ceasing. The arising and ceasing of the seven consciousnesses is precisely the arising and ceasing of the non-arising and non-ceasing of the tathāgatagarbha; hence it is not identical with its own non-arising and non-ceasing. Here, non-identity is not only clarified without violating non-difference, but non-identity is actually established by virtue of non-difference. Why is this? If the tathāgatagarbha lost its own non-arising and non-ceasing when concording with conditions to undergo arising and ceasing, there could be no arising and ceasing. Therefore, since arising and ceasing can exist due to non-arising and non-ceasing, this is non-difference, and hence non-identity." Exegesis: The meaning cited above harmonizes and unites the meanings of non-identity and non-difference. Now, in this division of approaches, it directly clarifies non-identity; if one harmonizes non-identity and non-difference to make them identical, that is the tenth approach. Here, taking the opportunity of the text on the arising and ceasing of the seven consciousnesses, it cites and harmonizes them.
