> Regarding the Commentary's statement: "Since the Great Master concealed his traces" and so forth, this is the fifth \[section\], investigating its origin while also displaying the sacred traces. The first couplet directly narrates the fundamental origin. In the Mahāsaṃnipāta-sūtra, when the Buddha was about to enter nirvāṇa, he entrusted the various bodhisattvas to go on alms rounds across the great chiliocosm. In this land there were many poisonous dragons causing harm, while the people mostly loved and delighted in the Mahāyāna; therefore, Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī dwelled here to carry out transformation, hence it says "Wondrous Virtue spread his radiance in the Eastern Xia." The Sūtra on Mañjuśrī's Parinirvāṇa says: "If someone merely hears his name, the sins of saṃsāra of one billion two hundred million kalpas will be eliminated. If someone pays homage, he will constantly be born in the Buddha's household. If someone recites his name for one day to seven days, Mañjuśrī will certainly descend. If there are past obstructions, one will be able to see him in a dream. If one can see his image, this person's rank will step into the holy fruit; his responsive transformations are vast." Therefore it says "spread his radiance." The next couplet accomplishes the preceding two lines. First, it accomplishes the preceding "The Great Master concealed his traces" while also resolving objections. That is, someone might ask: "Since he is constantly on Vulture Peak and at other dwelling places, why say he concealed his traces?" Therefore, it is now answered: "The essence of both sages is fundamentally and ever serene. The traces of both sages have concealment and manifestation. Now Vulture Peak is completely covered by wild thickets. Rooster Mountain is Cock's Foot Mountain (Kukkuṭapāda), which is also governed by Vulture Peak." From "responding and manifesting" downward, it accomplishes the preceding "spread his radiance in the Eastern Xia." The mountain resembles Vulture Peak, so it is called Vulture Peak (Gṛdhrakūṭa). Its acquiring of this name will be explained right below.
