> Regarding the commentary's "Second, within that which manifests there are also general and specific" and so on: the commentary text has two parts. First, it explains the general tenor of the text; second, it distinguishes and unfolds the meaning of the metaphors. Now to the first. The phrase "Specifically illustrating the capacity of beings to respond and the places of responsive manifestation": since the sun and moon illustrate the bodhisattva, the water and so forth illustrate the receptivity of beings, and also illustrate the places of the bodhisattva's response. Just as a shadow falls upon a hundred rivers, illustrating the bodhisattva's body pervading the dharmadhātu, the hundred rivers and streams illustrate the beings' receptivity and the lands where manifestation occurs.
