> Regarding the Commentary's stating from "Now, the first: karma is the cause of retribution and the foremost among the three hindrances" onward: it sets forth the separate repentance of karma and the reason for repenting it first, which can be understood from the text. From "It does not previously have an essence" onward, it explains the sūtra. Therein are two parts: first, it explains that it does not come from the east or other directions; having no essential nature is precisely the meaning of emptiness. Second, it explains that it arises from inverted \[views\]. As for the phrase "explains the reason for emptiness": arising from causes and conditions is precisely the reason for emptiness. Because it arises from inverted \[views\], the meaning of the emptiness of essential nature is established. From "Due to the sea of karmic hindrances" onward, this is a passage from the Guan Puxian jing. Citing this establishes the two meanings above, which is: "The entire ocean of karmic hindrances all arises from false ideation. If one wishes to repent, sit upright and contemplate the true mark." As for the phrase "making this empty wisdom correspond with the mind": this is also a passage from the Guan Puxian jing. Taking this to explain the present sūtra, one clearly and decisively sees without doubts. When empty wisdom corresponds, this wisdom is decisive. "Being able to know thus" in turn explains the word "bodhisattva"; because it makes the deva son repent, it is called "bodhisattva." "Thus" means that by virtue of seeing the principle of the two emptinesses, one is indeed a bodhisattva.
