> From the Commentary's "This is the Nirvāṇa..." downwards, it harmonizes with the ninth fascicle of the Nirvāṇa\[-sūtra\]. First it clarifies that the three transgressions are the heaviest, yet possess the cause of nirvāṇa, and does not mention icchantikas; later, from the "Chapter on Noble Practice" downwards, it includes icchantikas, saying: "Although icchantikas have severed their roots of goodness, they still possess the Buddha-nature." Therefore it embraces them all. These four clarify that even the most evil are not abandoned. As for the three transgressions: first, slandering the vaipulya sūtras; second, committing the four grave offenses; third, committing the five heinous sins. These three do not necessarily repudiate cause and effect; repudiating cause and effect is \[the mark of\] an icchantika.
