> Regarding the commentary's statement, "Could that untainted consciousness be spoken of?" downward: this is the third, blocking counter-defenses. The two sentences of the commentary block two counter-defenses. The first sentence addresses the fear that they might defend themselves by saying: "The marks of the pure are difficult to express, and therefore it is not mentioned." Hence it now blocks this by saying: "In that Alaṃkārasūtra, how could it speak of the existence of untainted consciousness? Is that not pure?" The second sentence addresses the fear that they might defend themselves by saying: "When the sūtra says 'unapprehensible,' its intent lies in the defiled." Hence it also blocks this by saying: "Why does the sūtra not say that the defiled is unapprehensible?"
