> "Eighth, appearing to turn the great wheel of Dharma": now, "first" and so forth explains the turning of the Dharma wheel. Explanation: The meaning of "Dharma wheel" is broad, as detailed in a separate chapter. Now it is briefly distinguished through three gates: 1. explaining the name; 2. bringing out the essence; 3. the characteristics of the turning. Now to the first: The Abhidharmakośa-śāstra also calls it the Brahmā-wheel (brahmacakra), because it is turned by the Tathāgata, the Great Brahmā. As for the term "Dharma wheel," "Dharma" means model and support, while "wheel" is like the wheel of a monarch, deriving its name from an analogy. It has briefly four meanings: 1. The meaning of perfection: because it is fully equipped in essence and function with hub, spokes, rim, axle, and so forth. 2. The meaning of crushing: it crushes afflictions, like subduing the unvanquished and so forth. 3. The meaning of suppressing: it causes the momentum of afflictions already subdued to turn far away, like suppressing those already subdued. 4. The meaning of indefiniteness: advancing from seeing to cultivation, and from cultivation to no-learning; from oneself to another, and from another's faith to understanding, and from understanding to practice, fruition, and so forth. And saying "turning" means preaching. Hence the general explanation states: rolling forth and flowing in round unobstructedness is called "wheel"; proceeding from oneself to the other is called "turning." If explained separately, there are briefly four meanings: "turning" means moving, revealing, conveying, and giving rise to. Moving proclaims the verbal teaching; revealing holds aloft the wondrous principle; conveying drives the noble path prior to sound; giving rise to awakens true cognition after words; completely crushing obstacles and afflictions—this is called turning the Dharma wheel. Explanation: These four correspond to teaching, principle, practice, and fruition in proper sequence, because the essence of the turning brought out below does not go beyond these four. Bringing out the essence and the characteristics of the turning are fully contained in the text.
