> Commentary: "Again, fourth, forbearance of difficult practice" and so forth: the above was framed in terms of the three forbearances; now it is framed in terms of the nine forbearances. Difficult practice has three, and this is one of them. "Being able to endure toward inferiors" is one difficult practice. Giving rise to forbearance toward superiors is easy, but giving rise to forbearance toward servants and children is difficult, because they ought to be reverent and compliant, while I ought to admonish and punish them. The phrase "forgiving their deficiencies" is the idea found in the \*Book of Jin\*. Wei Xima of the Jin—whenever he spoke, it was always a truthful record. At that time, a person opposed him contrary to principle, and later a servant acted contrary to principle, yet toward both of these people he showed no expression of anger. Someone asked him the reason. He answered: "When opposed contrary to principle, one may dispel it with principle. When people have deficiencies, one may forgive them with empathy." Hence it says "forgiving their deficiencies," and uses this to explain the sūtra's "being broad-minded when acting as a superior." This is also from the external classics, which state that dwelling as a superior and being able to be broad-minded, while serving as an inferior and being able to be respectful, is the conduct of an exemplary person.
