> The commentary's 'If according to the eight prides' and so forth reflects the view of the Kanding. Both the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra and the \*Tattvasiddhi-śāstra have eight prides. Tiantai Zhiyi cited the Mañjuśrīparipṛcchā-sūtra to explain the eight birds of the Lotus Sūtra and elucidate the eight prides, namely: 1. pride of full vigor like a kite; 2. pride of lineage like an owl; 3. pride of wealth like an eagle; 4. pride of autonomy like a vulture; 5. pride of lifespan like a crow; 6. pride of intelligence like a magpie; 7. pride of wholesome conduct like a dove; \[8.\] pride of physical appearance like a pigeon.
