> Regarding the commentary's text from "There are no evil māras" downward: this also represents the meaning of the Mahāyāna-upāyakauśalya-sūtra. Below it refers to the sūtra text. In full, the sūtra states: "When the bodhisattva sat beneath the Bodhi tree, he caused the evil Māra Pāpīyas to come to the foot of the Bodhi tree, not wishing the bodhisattva to achieve anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi. Good sons, Māra originally was unable to come to the foot of the Bodhi tree; if he had been able to come without my summoning him, there would be no such possibility. Good sons, at that time the bodhisattva sat beneath the Bodhi tree and reflected thus: 'In the four continents, who is the most honored and foremost? To whom do these four continents now belong?' The bodhisattva immediately knew that the evil Māra Pāpīyas was the most honored in the desire realm. 'If I now contend with Māra, and Māra is bested, all sentient beings in the desire realm will likewise be bested. At that time, the hosts of devas and humans will gather and come to the foot of the Bodhi tree, and having arrived, they will surely generate pure faith.'" Below, it quotes the general sense: "The hosts of Māra, the hosts of devas, and the eight classes \[of beings\], seeing the bodhisattva's playful sport, generated bodhicitta and all attained liberation." Therefore the commentary states, "By subduing the superior, the rest are conquered."
