> Regarding the Commentary's statement, "Sixth: having exhausted the fetters of existence...," the sūtra states "free from the bondage of fetters and drives"; hence the nine fetters (saṃyojana) are used to interpret the character "fetter" in the sūtra. This also appeared above, and here their names are briefly indicated: first, the fetter of craving; second, the fetter of hostility; third, conceit; fourth, ignorance; fifth, doubt; sixth, views; seventh, grasping; eighth, jealousy; and ninth, stinginess. Because these nine kinds repeatedly manifest and arise, afflicting self and others and causing future suffering to increase, they are specifically termed "fetters." As for the ten drives (anuśaya), they refer to the six root defilements expanding "views" into five. Because these serve as the causes of saṃsāra, they are termed the "fetters of existence." Regarding "because active manifestation has been separated from," in the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra-upadeśa this phrase is precisely "all contaminations (āsrava) are exhausted." The treatise considers this to be active manifestation, differing from the acquisition of defilement, which is the seed.
