> The second major section. Regarding: "The ancient masters' structural divisions range from one to ten": First, it is taken as a single whole, meaning that each is a single position. Second, following Master Huiyuan, it is divided into two: first, drawing near to the good friend; second, from "Informing" downward, listening to the true Dharma. Constantly keeping them in mind, contemplating them, and practicing as taught are all contained within the text. Under the first, drawing near to the good friend, there are four parts: first, hearing of the good friend; second, seeking the good friend; third, seeing the good friend; fourth, inquiring about the essentials of the Dharma. Within the first, hearing of the good friend, there are also four parts: first, listing the name of the country, which is the general location; second, mountains and so forth, which is the specific location; third, the name of the good friend; fourth, instructing him to go visit. Second, seeking the good friend has three parts: first, rejoicing upon hearing; second, paying homage at his feet and taking leave; third, gradually traveling to visit the friend. Third, seeing the good friend has two parts: first, going to see him; second, paying respects and withdrawing to stand. Fourth, inquiring has three parts: first, stating that he has already generated the aspiration, clarifying that he already possesses the capacity; second, from "yet do not know" downward, inquiring directly about the method of practice; third, from "I have heard" downward, praising his virtues and requesting him to expound \[the Dharma\]. Drawing near to the good friend is concluded.
