> Regarding the commentary's phrase, "One cycle has already been completed": twelve years make one cycle, completing the twelve earthly branches. "Passing ten thousand kalpas": the ten faiths are completed over ten thousand kalpas, whereupon one enters correct determination. The twelve abodes have already appeared in the "Ten Abodes Chapter." Regarding the commentary's phrase, "The ten meanings of the ocean of wisdom are as explained in the ten grounds": the ocean has ten virtues to represent the ten grounds. Regarding the phrase, "Here it is the ocean of compassion": these ten virtues differ slightly from those of the ten grounds. Taking them to accord with the Dharma, they correspond to the preceding ten kinds of compassionate minds: 1. the mind of benefit, because benefit is broad and vast; 2. the mind of great compassion, because great compassion is so profound that none can fathom it; 3. the mind of peace and joy, because it begins by bestowing various kinds of worldly joy; 4. the mind of secure abiding, meaning causing beings of bad conduct to abide in good conduct, which corresponds to the manifold jewels; 5. the mind of pity, because it contains and receives all; 6. the mind of embrace, embracing various non-Buddhists to lead them to correct faith, just as waters of many colors dwell together in the ocean; 7. the mind of safeguarding, because it safeguards all who have already generated the mind, which is serving as a reliance and refuge for immeasurable beings; 8. the mind regarding \[others\] as oneself, meaning embracing the great vow of bodhi and regarding living beings as one's own body, having a great body of action; 9. the mind toward the teacher, meaning regarding those who practice and advance on the Great Vehicle path with the deference due to a teacher, for a teacher must be inquired of and received from like a great rain of Dharma; 10. the mind toward the guide, meaning revering those possessing virtues as the Buddha, and thus clear, placid, without increase or decrease. Matching these ten compassions to these ten similes is like two halves of a tally fitting together. Therefore, the preceding praise of the ten minds was the doctrinal explanation, and now this ocean simile illustrates the preceding ten minds, matching them all the more fully.
