> The eighth \[good friend\], the ṛṣi, is "assigned to the Abode of the Kumārabhūta"; this is because the mind does not generate inverted views and does not give rise to demonic obstacles that break the bodhicitta. Regarding the commentary's "just like the catalpa tree of this region, and so on, down to: the rest is as in the Sounds and Meanings": the Sounds and Meanings states in full: "Catalpa tree," and below says, "However, it is extremely fragrant; its flowers are purple, and its fruit is like a loquat." It states in full: "Its leaves are like the willow tree of this region; its fruit resembles the loquat fruit, with calyxes like persimmons. Moreover, its species is enduring and long-lived, and among all trees it can grow the tallest and largest." Regarding the commentary's "holding hands signifies the meaning of bestowing": this is explained in terms of doctrinal characteristics. Stating "having the power of mutual gathering": this is explained in terms of doctrinal principle. The above is common to all teachings. Here in the Avataṃsaka, the spiritual friend has power and Sudhana lacks power; the powerful gathers the powerless, so through the spiritual friend Sudhana is caused to see. If Sudhana has power, then the ṛṣi lacks power; the powerful gathers the powerless, and what the ṛṣi has realized is entirely attained by Sudhana. Therefore, they mutually gather each other.
