> Twenty-fifth: Explaining the Ten Mysteries. Question: I have earnestly heard that the profound meaning of the Avataṃsaka is called the Ten Mysteries. Please list their names and briefly set forth their meaning. Answer: 'Ten' signifies the inexhaustible; each and every one penetrates the profound. Whichever single dharma is raised, it fully possesses these ten: First is the gate of simultaneous complete correspondence, like a single drop of the great ocean containing the flavor of a hundred rivers. Second is the gate of the unhindered freedom of the broad and narrow, like a mirror one foot wide showing reflections spanning a thousand li. Third is the gate of the mutual containment of the one and many without being identical, like a thousand lamps in a single room whose lights interpenetrate. Fourth is the gate of the free mutual identity of all dharmas, like gold and the color of gold, the two being inseparable. Fifth is the gate of the secret and the manifest being simultaneously established, like the crescent moon in the clear sky where the dark and the bright coexist. Sixth is the gate of the subtle mutually containing and establishing \[each other\], like a lapis lazuli vase holding many mustard seeds. Seventh is the gate of the realm of Indra's net, like two mirrors mutually reflecting, repeatedly transmitting and projecting light without end. Eighth is the gate of relying on phenomena to reveal the Dharma and produce understanding, like raising an image or lifting an arm—whatever strikes the eye is the Way. Ninth is the gate of the different formation of separated dharmas in the ten periods of time, like a dream of a single evening soaring through a hundred years. Tenth is the gate of the host and companions being completely luminous and possessing all virtues, like the place where the North Star resides, around which all stars revolve. The ten are without before and after; raising one gathers all of them completely. These are the unique, profound purports of the Avataṃsaka. Respectfully answered.
