> Thirty-fifth: The ten supernormal knowledges and the six supernormal knowledges. Question: What distinction is there between the ten supernormal knowledges and the six supernormal knowledges? I respectfully ask that you explain their sameness and difference to resolve doubts. Answer: The ten supernormal knowledges and the six supernormal knowledges are broadly the same with minor differences; wishing to reveal the perfect ultimate, the six are unfolded into ten. As for the six supernormal knowledges: First, the supernormal knowledge of psychic power; second, the supernormal knowledge of the divine eye; third, the supernormal knowledge of the divine ear; fourth, the supernormal knowledge of the minds of others; fifth, the supernormal knowledge of past lives; sixth, the supernormal knowledge of the extinction of contaminants. How are they unfolded? Answer: Those of the minds of others and past lives—these two are not unfolded; the remaining four are each divided into two, thus becoming ten. Specifically, the divine eye, in terms of seeing the present and future, is divided into the second and fourth names among the ten: the divine eye sees the present, while the fourth name, exhausting the eons of the future, is seeing the future. The divine ear, in terms of hearing sounds and speech, is divided into the fifth and seventh: the fifth name, divine ear, hears sounds, while the seventh name, discernment, is speech. Psychic power, in terms of functional activities and the form body, is divided into the sixth and eighth: the sixth name, essencelessness and inaction while going to all buddha lands, is functional activity, while the eighth name, innumerable form bodies, specifically speaks of manifesting bodies. The extinction of contaminants, in terms of the differences between samādhi and wisdom, is divided into the ninth and tenth: the ninth, in terms of being uncontaminated within wisdom, is named the supernormal knowledge of all dharmas; the tenth, in terms of the extinction of contaminants within samādhi, is named the samādhi of cessation. Thus the six become ten. However, their functional activities are all identical to the dharmadhātu, encompassing and inconceivable, entirely different from the six. Respectfully answered.
