> Explanation: The first half of the verse versifies the dharmas of the ten absorptions; the next half in order versifies the dharmas of the ten superknowledges; the latter half in order versifies the dharmas of the ten patiences. These dharmas of absorption and the rest are the advanced progressions of the ten stages; hence, after the ten stages, the ten absorptions are then spoken, which is the fifth stage among the six stages. As for the six stages: first, the stage of the ten abodes; second, the stage of the ten practices; third, the stage of the ten dedications of merit; fourth, the stage of the ten stages; fifth, the stage of the Stainless Stage; sixth, the stage of Sublime Enlightenment. One should know that this meaning is explained in detail in the Benye jing and other texts. What are the ten absorptions? First, the great samādhi of universal light; second, the great samādhi of sublime light; third, the great samādhi of sequentially going everywhere to all Buddha-lands; fourth, the great samādhi of the practice of a pure deep mind; fifth, the great samādhi of knowing the treasury of past adornments; sixth, the great samādhi of the treasury of the radiance of wisdom; seventh, the great samādhi of clearly knowing the Buddha-adornments of all worlds; eighth, the great samādhi of the differentiated bodies of sentient beings; ninth, the great samādhi of sovereignty in the dharmadhātu; tenth, the great samādhi of the unimpeded wheel. What are the ten superknowledges? First, the superknowledge of the wisdom of knowing others' minds; second, the superknowledge of the wisdom of the heavenly eye; third, the superknowledge of the wisdom of recollecting past abodes; fourth, the superknowledge of the wisdom of knowing the kalpas of the future limit; fifth, the attainment of the unobstructed pure heavenly ear; sixth, the superknowledge of the spiritual wisdom of abiding in the absence of intrinsic nature; seventh, the superknowledge of the wisdom of skillfully discerning the sounds and speeches of all sentient beings; eighth, the superknowledge of the wisdom of producing the adornments of immeasurable asaṃkhyeya form bodies; ninth, the superknowledge of the wisdom of all dharmas; tenth, the superknowledge of the wisdom of the samādhi of the cessation of all dharmas. What are the ten patiences? First, patience with sounds; second, accordant patience; third, patience with the non-arising of dharmas; fourth, patience \[that dharmas are\] like an illusion; fifth, patience \[that dharmas are\] like a mirage; sixth, patience \[that dharmas are\] like a dream; seventh, patience \[that dharmas are\] like an echo; eighth, patience \[that dharmas are\] like a shadow; ninth, patience \[that dharmas are\] like a magical transformation; tenth, patience \[that dharmas are\] like space. Among these three teachings, the first, 'absorption', is called samādhi in Sanskrit and here called 'equipoise' (samāhita/samādhi): free from sinking and agitation, one focuses single-mindedly on one object and holds the mind without distraction; this is the meaning of calm abiding, so absorption is named by 'equipoise'. Next, 'superknowledge' is also called spiritual superknowledge: marvelous functions difficult to fathom are called 'spiritual', and sovereign unimpededness is called 'superknowledge'. When commonly called 'wisdom': being unobstructed regarding cognitive objects is called superknowledge; superknowledge is the function of wisdom, hence it is called 'superknowledge of wisdom'. Finally, 'patience' means patient understanding, approval, and acceptance of the heard Dharma; its essence is wisdom itself. Such meanings are explained in detail in the sūtra; fearing verbosity, they are not fully elaborated here. As the above dharma-paryāyas are entered by universal faculties, through what gates can one enter those dharmas? Those gates capable of entry are briefly of ten kinds. The verse says:
