> Thirteenth, the miscellaneous contemplation. There are two parts: First, contemplating the sixteen-foot image. Second, from 'The body of Amitāyus is boundless' onward, explaining Amida's sovereign transformations. 'Firm practice' means constantly practicing contemplation and cultivating without weariness. Whether the object of contemplation is large or small, both are the Buddha's body, brushing away the doubts of the assembly and giving rise to people's reverence. Why does the assembly have doubts? Having previously heard of the vast and immeasurable \[body\], now hearing of contemplating a small one, they doubt it is not the Buddha's body and disrespect the small one; therefore it must be brushed away, explaining that all are the Buddha, so as to give rise to their reverence. As for 'merely contemplating the marks of the hands', some interpret this as referring to the head. Above it says that in Avalokiteśvara's heavenly crown on his head there is a standing transformation Buddha, and on Mahāsthāmaprāpta's head there is a treasure vase; by this they are distinguished. For those who interpret it as the hands: above it says his hands are soft, with 84,000 lines, and with these precious hands he receives and guides sentient beings. Both are sūtra passages; their application has no single fixed place.
