> Third, the contemplation of the ground, which has two parts: first, dividing the sections; second, following the text to explain them, which has four parts: First, "gradual visualization" means transforming the visualization of ice to represent lapis lazuli. Although one repeatedly contemplates the ground's various adornments, it does not yet correspond to the dwelling place of that Buddha's superior manifest body. Truly, because the threefold contemplation is still faint and still involves provisional visualization, it is termed a rough perception of that ground. Second, from "if one attains" onwards, the real contemplation. When the efficacy of the wondrous contemplation becomes prominent and the samādhi is achieved, one sees the ground upon which that superior body relies; how could the marks of adornment be fully described? One should understand that the land of common residence crosswise encompasses the \[other\] three lands, and its marks are by no means few. As the various sūtras say, when ordinary beings perform lesser good deeds and dedicate the merit to seek rebirth, even if based on the Mahāyāna, it is still scattered goodness; therefore the pure marks of Anyang they evoke are still inferior. If one practices the mind contemplation of the wondrous doctrine of the present Sudden Teaching, the pure marks seen are eternally distinct from those of other divisions. Just as by cultivating wondrous contemplation within the defilement of common residence, one can still see the honored and extraordinary \[body\] and the land of real reward, how could the body and land of the pure land of common residence be treated as uniform? Therefore, when the wondrous samādhi of the present visualization of the ground is achieved, the seen adornments cannot be fully described. Third, from "the Buddha told" onwards, explaining the benefits. The commentary states: "The preceding water is a visualization," because it relies on the phenomenon of water forming ice in this realm to represent that jewel ground; it is merely a provisional visualization, and is therefore called a rough perception. Now that the samādhi is attained and one truly sees that ground, it is called real contemplation. As for saying that provisional visualization cannot extinguish sins, this is the Great Master's way of encouraging progress in accord with the sūtra, urging practitioners to quickly achieve samādhi; it does not mean that provisional visualization extinguishes no sins at all. How is this known? Even the contemplation of the sun is analogized to the amount of sins extinguished in the lower grade of lower rebirth; how could roughly seeing the ground fail to eliminate transgressions altogether? Fourth, from "making this" onwards, revealing the incorrect and correct. When the contemplation accords with the sūtra, it is seeing in accordance with nature, and is called correct contemplation. If the marks seen run contrary to the sūtra, demonic occurrences are arising, and it is called incorrect contemplation. The same applies to all following \[contemplations\].
