> "And she spoke these words: 'In the past, the Tathāgata, the World-Honoured One, constantly sent Ānanda to come and comfort me. Now I am in sorrow, and the majestic dignity of the World-Honoured One is such that I have no way to see him. I pray that you send the Venerable Maudgalyāyana and Ānanda to meet with me.'" Ānanda was the Buddha's attendant and regularly went to comfort her. Propagating the Dharma and benefiting people inevitably requires relying on the royal power; thus, although the Buddha was a supreme sage, he accommodated ordinary sentiments to serve as a model for later generations. Vaidehī revered the Buddha and did not dare to entreat him directly, wishing to see the two masters in order to hear the essentials of the Dharma. Ānanda is translated here as "Delight" (Qingxi), or "Stainless," or "Joyful." Third, sorrowfully paying homage and entreating.
