> The sūtra states: “Śāriputra, one cannot attain birth in that land with few roots of goodness and blessed merit as causal conditions.” Next, this explains the first \[part\], rejecting deficient causes. It is truly feared that sentient beings, having heard the Buddha say that ten recitations at the end of life allow one to immediately attain rebirth, might think: ‘My life span is not yet finished today; I might as well be negligent for now.’ To prevent this thought, it therefore says that one cannot attain birth in that land with few roots of goodness. Someone explained: ‘This passage precisely corresponds to the intention of a different time in the \*Mahāyānasaṃgraha\*.’ My present explanation is not so. When the treatise speaks of an ‘intention of a different time’, it is like a person who recites the name of Prabhūtaratna Buddha and definitely does not recede from unexcelled bodhi; or those who attain rebirth in the Land of Peace and Bliss merely by generating the aspiration—these are all intentions of a different time. Now, those who recite the Buddha's name merely aspire to be born \[there\], without discussing whether they recede from bodhi or not. Moreover, focusing on reciting the Buddha's name immediately leaves behind the ten unwholesome deeds, and a single recitation immediately eliminates the saṃsāric transgressions of eighty billion kalpas, to say nothing of many recitations! Thus, this is active practice, not merely making an aspiration. The \*Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā\* says: ‘Whenever bodhisattvas give rise to minor practice, they make profound and vast aspirations; because the aspiration is vast, they attain a great fruit.’ Now, we frequently recite the Buddha's name, which is itself manifold practice, and furthermore we aspire to be born \[there\]; aspiration and practice mutually support each other, so why should we not attain birth in the pure land? Sentient beings, hearing that one is not born with few virtues, harbor doubts: ‘How much merit must one possess before one can attain birth there?’ Therefore, the text below states: ‘The Tathāgata instructs that one recite the Buddha's name for one day, up to seven days.’ From this we know that reciting the Buddha's name and making the aspiration will definitely bring about rebirth, and is not an intention of a different time. When the present sūtra speaks of ‘roots of goodness’, they do not necessarily have to be the three roots of goodness of non-greed, non-anger, and non-delusion, though they are not separated from them either; but the three categories of karma of roots of goodness cultivated through reciting the Buddha's name for one day and so forth, as discussed now, without exception lead to rebirth, and are definitively not for a different time.”}\],
