- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.79](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1757.1.79)

> The sūtra says: 'Have I heard.' Next is the explanation identifying the person capable of hearing. The \*Buddhabhūmi-śāstra\* states: 'Through the Tathāgata's compassion and the power of his fundamental vows as a predominant condition, words and meanings arise corresponding to each other upon the consciousness of the listener; therefore it is said, "have I heard".' Moreover, 'I' refers to the designated individual, which is the general designation for the single body; 'heard' refers to the ear, which is a specific designation among the six sense faculties. Now, leaving aside the specific and adopting the general, it is therefore said, 'have I heard'.
