> In Sanskrit \[he is\] called Mahāmaudgalyāyana; saying "Da Mulian" is an error. Mahāmaudgalyāyana means in Chinese "Great Mudgala Clan." In high antiquity there was an immortal living in a quiet mountain retreat who regularly gathered mung beans (mudga) to eat, and thus took this as his clan name. The Venerable One's mother belonged to that clan. He was named after his mother's clan, and having attained great spiritual penetrations, to distinguish him from other inferior clans, he was called "Great Mudgala Clan." In his youth he was close friends with Śāriputra. Deeply detesting worldly defilement, they had not yet found a refuge. The two together served the non-Buddhist Sañjaya to study his doctrine, but they said to each other: "This is not the ultimate principle. Let each of us visit other places to seek out superior teachings." At that time he met the Venerable Aśvajit entering the city to convert and guide beings. Śāriputra, seeing that his deportment was relaxed and refined, went up to ask: "Who is your teacher, Venerable One?" He replied: "The World-Honoured One Śākyamuni is my teacher." Śāriputra asked: "What Dharma does he preach? May I hear it?" The Venerable Aśvajit expounded appropriately, saying: "Of all phenomena arising from causes, their causes the Tathāgata has told, and their cessation too—such is the doctrine of the Great Śramaṇa." Having heard this, Śāriputra immediately realized the first fruit. He then met Maudgalyāyana and in turn expounded the Dharma to him, who also attained the first fruit. Thereupon, along with two hundred and fifty followers, they went together to the Buddha's dwelling. Arriving there, they bowed their heads in homage and wished to follow the Buddha's Dharma. The World-Honoured One addressed them, saying: "Welcome, bhikṣus!" Having heard these words, their precepts were fully accomplished, and gradually cultivating, they became arhats. This Venerable One is foremost in spiritual penetrations and peerless in filial devotion; he rescued \[his mother\] from suffering and peril in the nether regions, and elevated his loving mother to the celestial realm. Hence he is called "external penetration."
