> Praise: Third, good thoughts arising upon hearing. 'Naturally' (ziran): habitual spontaneity is called natural; it does not mean without causes and conditions. 'Giving rise to minds of recollecting the Buddha, recollecting the Dharma, and recollecting the Saṅgha': the names of the Three Jewels are as explained before. There are three kinds of recollection of the Buddha: 1. Mental recollection, binding mindfulness within the mind; 2. Low-voiced recollection, so that one's own ears hear it; 3. Loud recollection, which has ten kinds of merit: first, it can dispel sleepiness; second, the heavenly Māra is terrified; third, the sound pervades the ten directions; fourth, suffering in the three wretched destinies ceases; fifth, external sounds do not enter; sixth, the mind is not scattered; seventh, courageous vigor; eighth, all Buddhas rejoice; ninth, samādhi becomes manifest; tenth, rebirth in the Pure Land. One should make a fourfold analysis: 1. Mental recollection without verbal recitation; 2. Verbal recitation without mental recollection; 3. Both mental recollection and verbal recitation; 4. Neither mental recollection nor verbal recitation. Among these four possibilities, the first and third apply. The Ruixiang jing says: 'A clear breeze gently rises, neither cold nor hot, blowing upon the nets and jeweled trees, proclaiming the supreme, subtle, and wondrous sound of the Dharma; those who hear it do not give rise to defilements, and naturally experience joy as if attaining samādhi.'
