> Sengliang states: 'Exhausting all marks' means all marks of evil. 'Concealing' means not confessing spontaneously to the wise. Speaking in terms of their disposition, since they did not know it was an offense, how could they know to expose it? Speaking in terms of the fact, it was simply concealing. Not repenting is also like this. 'Instituted gradually' speaks of the marks of the minor and grave among the seven classes. Sengzong states: This answers the first question. It means that people's faculties were shallow and narrow, not yet capable of bearing the profound teaching; if it had been preached all at once, it would have further aggravated their illness, even to becoming icchantikas. 'Exhausting all marks' is the mark of severing wholesome roots. 'Having no causes and conditions' means having no causes and conditions for being saved; it can also mean holding that everything has no causes and conditions. 'Becoming further rampant' is because deep slandering obscures in ignorance.
