> Sengliang states: "In India, the east is the head, the west is the rear, the north is the left, and the south is the right. Walking to the east manifests the beginning. The beginning has two kinds: first, manifesting an infant; second, clarifying a leading guide, so as to manifest sovereignty. The right side is convenient for deeds. Because the west is the rear, it manifests the final body. The north manifests supremacy; among the four continents, Uttarakuru is supreme. In this land \[of China\], spring is east, summer is south, autumn is west, and winter is north. All things are born in spring, grow in summer, bear fruit in autumn, and are stored in winter; all undertakings are completed. The 'supreme field of merit' means its function of nourishing is supreme, symbolizing that the field of the Buddha is supreme. As for the 'seven steps,' in India when a king of elephants is born, it walks seven steps upon leaving the womb, by which one knows it is an elephant king. When the bodhisattva is first born, he manifests the mark of a sovereign king. In 'proclaiming such words,' above he demonstrated it with the body, and here he demonstrates it with speech, clarifying that he is the sovereign Dharma King of the three realms."
