> Sengliang states: “Named the Dhātu Sūtra”—when Śākyamuni appeared in the world, he largely analyzed dharmatā, so this sūtra was given this name; when past Buddhas became Buddhas, they gave it this name. It is called the “Thus-Spoken Sūtra.” Sengzong states: Here it is translated as “Thus-Spoken Sūtra.” It was the name given when past Buddhas spoke the sūtras. Śākyamuni named it “Dhātu” because of the meaning of differentiating the realms and characteristics of dharmas. Krakucchanda Buddha named it “Drum of Amṛta,” meaning that a drum smeared with poison eliminates illness when heard; by writing the principle upon bamboo and silk, hearing or seeing it eliminates illness. Baoliang states: What was spoken throughout the teaching career of Śākyamuni was named the Dhātu Sūtra. Down to Kāśyapa Buddha naming it “Analysis of Emptiness,” past events are used to verify present events.
