> Sengliang comments: Dharmas are obtained through conditions; because they lack nature, they are called empty. The conditioned is obtained through conditions, and the unconditioned is seen through conditions; both lack nature. Sengzong says: This means that the essential nature of all dharmas is empty; how could it rely on dispelling illnesses? The reason permanence and impermanence are cited together is that impermanence is empty, so it is not discussed. Now discussing permanence and bliss, they can indeed be wondrous existence in conventional truth. However, since these dharmas arise in mutual relativity, relativity is provisional, and therefore they are mutually empty. Baoliang says: Beginningless emptiness and nature-emptiness both take their names from eliminating imputations. The bodhisattva contemplates all dharmas as fundamentally beginningless, and even saṃsāra, the Three Jewels, and buddhadhātu as entirely empty; this uses the latter to verify the former. Having no nature is also like this; how could there be a primordial worldly nature (prakṛti)?
