> Fayao comments: Nirvāṇa stands as the supreme principle and encompasses many things; three meanings are briefly raised to reveal its essence. This raises an objection based on the bodhisattva's real trace. If afflictions are not yet exhausted, then the omniscient wisdom has not yet been attained; because it has not yet been attained, entanglements and fetters still remain and vimokṣa has not yet been attained. This raises the objection based on vimokṣa. Sengzong says: Delusion obstructs illumination; if even a single hair of it is not exhausted, omniscient wisdom does not arise. This means wisdom and severance are not complete, so how could it generate the merit of giving? Baoliang says: The intention of the five objections: the first objects that omniscient wisdom has been attained or not yet attained; the second objects that the four Māras have been subdued or not yet subdued; the third objects that the dharmakāya has been attained or not yet attained; the fourth objects that the causal practice is fulfilled or not yet fulfilled; the fifth objects that he relies on the nourishment of food or does not rely on it. This is the first. Fa'an says: Among the five objections, the first three clarify that when he previously received the offering, what should have been eliminated had not yet been eliminated; the next one clarifies that formerly what should have been attained had not been attained; the fifth objects regarding using and not using.
