> Daosheng comments: How do we know he has long ceased to be a body of food? When one sees the buddhadhātu and illumination reaches its ultimate, how could he rely on food? Yet saying that he saw it after eating, one replies knowing it is not real. Sengliang says: With respect to a bodhisattva of real practice, there is both relying on food for function and not really using it; both are pure. Why is this? As a matter of principle, food is digested into the hundred vessels and becomes functional in the body. By the time it is used, he immediately sees the buddhadhātu and no longer has afflictions; therefore, they are equal.
