> Sengliang says: Having the nature of birth before being born means that committing evil is perverse and will inevitably bring about perverse retribution. The principle of birth already exists before being born; the nature of goodness is not perverse and does not bring about perverse retribution. The undefiled has no principle of birth; this answers the earlier proposition that the undefiled is unborn. Sengzong says: Above it asked why the truth of cessation and the undefiled are not born; now it clarifies that the truth of cessation cannot be born by characteristics, but can only be realized through an illuminating cause. Baoliang says: This comprehensively explains the third proposition and the objections of the following four propositions.
