> Sengliang states: Although the gradual teaching speaks of existence, its ultimate aim is emptiness; because they see the emptiness of phenomena, they cultivate the samādhi of emptiness to cause them to attain the seeing of emptiness. 'Having no phenomenal nature' is also because of cultivating emptiness. For this reason, cultivating emptiness leads to seeing emptiness. Baoliang states: 'Having a phenomenal nature' means having conventional-truth function. 'Having no phenomenal nature' clarifies that fundamentally it is empty. It is precisely because they do not see emptiness that he causes them to cultivate emptiness in order to attain emptiness; therefore, they cultivate the samādhi of emptiness. It is also because of cultivating emptiness that they see all phenomena as empty.
