> Sengliang comments: 'Expedient manifestation is called seeing'—because of manifestation, both forms and sounds are called 'seeing.' The body of liberation is also called 'seeing through hearing,' and the rest are all like this. Sengzong comments: The fourth turns back to comprehend the principle and the prior thesis. Baoliang comments: The Buddha again exhorts faith based on the two matters of seeing with the eye and seeing through hearing. The 'permanent' one refers to the dharmakāya; the 'impermanent' one refers to the responsive body (nirmāṇakāya). The 'visible' refers to the Buddha and tenth-stage bodhisattvas. The 'invisible' refers to all sentient beings. The tenth stage and the Buddha may be called 'seeing with the eye'; those from the ninth stage downward solely rely on faith, so they belong to 'seeing through hearing.' The Buddha sees the buddhadhātu distinctly and clearly, so it is said to be 'like form'; from the tenth stage down, they do not see it clearly, so it is said to be 'not form.'
