> Sengliang comments: "Conditioned phenomena are in continuous succession; thus 'abiding' ultimately has no real abiding. The Tathāgata has eternally severed the conditioned; one should not request him to abide." Baoliang comments: "The second dispels attachment. Having just distinguished the characteristics of the Way, because the principle of emptiness is difficult to be settled in and those of lower folly have not awakened, analogies are cited to clarify the principle: through inevitable effort, practicing good cannot be made to obtain bad fruit, nor can practicing evil be made to obtain good fruit. Since the two causes cannot be interchanged, it is clear that the Way is signless and unconditioned; where, ultimately, could it abide?"
