> Sengliang comments: This clarifies the absence of wisdom. If good arises from understanding, it cannot be severed; if it does not arise from understanding, encountering perversity will sever it. Though he recited and chanted in the past, it did not arise from understanding, so he could not be saved either. This answers the second objection. 'One who knows well the characteristics of phenomena' refers to knowing having two kinds: direct knowing and inferential knowing of characteristics. He said the Buddha does not know directly, nor is he omniscient. Sengzong comments: Although he received the twelve divisions of the canon, because he did not understand their import, he regressed and slandered, even severing his good roots. How much less could he be saved if he had not upheld them?
