> Sengliang comments: The Buddha taught that those whose karma is weak and retribution is slow have an intermediate existence, while those whose karma is strong and retribution is swift have no intermediate existence. Yet confused people, hearing that it exists, say it exists for all; hearing that it does not exist, say it does not exist for all; hence dispute arose. Sengzong comments: The third disputatious argument. The Buddha's speaking of intermediate existence as the aggregate of birth is an upāya. If discussed, down to Avīci and up to the four formless realms, there is strictly no intermediate existence. In between, it may exist or may not exist; this is the correct principle. Baoliang comments: Speaking of existence or non-existence is not necessarily a rigid demarcation. Karma is simply either determinate or indeterminate: if determinate, it exists; if indeterminate, it does not exist. If discussed from the Middle Path, it both exists and does not exist.
