Seeking permanence without ceasing, they ultimately give rise to wrong views. Fayao says: Although they know that this sūtra can attain the eternal fruit, they are unable to know where permanence resides, and further preach various eternal phenomena, which is called 'adding water to it.' Sengzong says: The fourth parable. Ghee as a substance is exceedingly clear; wishing to obtain it quickly, they add water to make it clear. In this case, the clear appearance resembles it, but the flavor differs. Although they know that nirvāṇa is a phenomenon of permanence and bliss, wishing to obtain it quickly, they reckon that this body is itself permanent and blissful: the name is identical, but the reality is different. This is compared to adding water, which spoils the blood-mixed milk; if one reckons the body to be the self, one harms the goodness of humans and gods.
