> Question: This sūtra fully clarifies various meanings; why does it speak exclusively of Great Nirvāṇa? Answer: Nirvāṇa is the central theme, and therefore it is spoken of exclusively; or it may be said that the various meanings cannot all be made apparent at once, so nirvāṇa is provisionally adduced. The syllable \[vā\]nā means "resting," which is here omitted for brevity. Resting has three meanings: first, resting the causes and fruits of conditioned birth-and-death and entering into the unconditioned is called resting; second, resting practice and tallying with reality is called resting, which is why the text below says, "If one is able to sever the practices of the thirty-seven factors \[of awakening\], this is called nirvāṇa"; third, resting transformation and returning to reality is called resting. This adduces that which is expressed.
