> Although the sacred teachings are numerous, they do not go beyond these two. Thus Nāgārjuna said: 'After the Buddha's parinirvāṇa, Kāśyapa and Ānanda compiled the tripiṭaka at Rājagṛha as the śrāvaka piṭaka; Mañjuśrī and Ānanda compiled the Mahāyāna sūtras at the Cakravāḍa Mountains as the bodhisattva piṭaka.' The Bodhisattvabhūmi also says: 'For the practices of śrāvakas and bodhisattvas leading out of suffering, the Buddha taught the sūtras.' Those who compiled the scriptures compiled them into two piṭakas: by explaining the practices of śrāvakas, it is the śrāvaka piṭaka; by explaining the practices of bodhisattvas, it is the bodhisattva piṭaka. That treatise further states: 'Among the twelve divisions, only the vaipulya section is the bodhisattva piṭaka; the remaining eleven divisions are the śrāvaka piṭaka.' This sūtra also states: 'Only the vaipulya section is upheld by bodhisattvas; the remaining eleven divisions are upheld by the two vehicles.' What is upheld by bodhisattvas is the bodhisattva piṭaka; what is upheld by the two vehicles is the śrāvaka piṭaka. Therefore, we know that the sacred discourses do not go beyond these two. These two are also called the Mahāyāna and the Hīnayāna, the teachings of half letters and complete letters, and so forth. Although the names change, their meaning is not distinct. Now, this sūtra is subsumed under the bodhisattva piṭaka among the two piṭakas; it is a dharma gate that nurtures sentient beings of the gradual teaching. Hence the text below states: 'First teach the half letters, and afterward teach the complete letters.' The demarcation of the teaching is now known.
