> Question: The Tathāgata's dharmakāya, virtues, and powers are not phenomena of suffering. Why is delusion regarding these called delusion regarding the truth of suffering? Answer: Although these are not the characteristics of suffering, they are the reality of suffering. Therefore, delusion regarding these is called delusion regarding the truth of suffering. What does this mean? The true nature of suffering is the tathāgatagarbha; the tathāgatagarbha is the essence of all ordinary beings and buddhas. Looked at from the standpoint of the Buddha, it is originally and constantly pure, and outside of this garbha not a single \[instance of\] saṃsāra can be found; therefore, the tathāgatagarbha is itself the Buddha's body, itself the Buddha's virtues. Discussed in terms of ordinary beings, that tathāgatagarbha is veiled by delusion; the veiled garbha serves as the basis for the dharmakāya when it is later revealed, and is called the cause of buddhahood, called buddha-nature. Such buddha-nature is neither two nor distinct from that true reality and the Buddha's dharmakāya. Hence the text below states that there is suffering, there is the truth, and there is the real, up to: there is the path, there is the truth, and there is the real. That 'true reality' is the Tathāgata's buddha-nature, \[vast like\] empty space, because there is no difference \[between them\]. Now, the Buddha's body and all the Buddha's virtues are spoken of as the reality of suffering; delusion regarding this reality of suffering is called delusion regarding the truth of suffering. The other truths are also like this.
