> Next, the five names are listed. As for 'noble practice', the name is established with reference to the person: all buddhas and bodhisattvas are called 'noble' because they accord with correctness, and since it is what noble ones practice, it is called 'noble practice'. As for 'brahmacaryā practice', the designation is established according to its meaning: 'brahma' means pure, so practice that is pure is called 'brahmacaryā practice'. As for 'divine practice', it is also named according to its meaning: 'divine' has many meanings, as fully explained below; here the meaning of purity is taken, so the practice of pure devas is called 'divine practice'. In foreign countries there are many names: purifying oneself is called pure (śuci), while purifying others is called brahma; in this land the terms are few, so both are generally called pure. This is just like bodhi and mārga, which are distinct names in foreign countries, but here are both generally called 'the path'; it is also like nirvāṇa and vinaya, which here are both generally called 'cessation'. As for 'illness practice', the name is established in relation to its object: because the practice can cure illness, it is 'illness practice'. As for 'infant practice', the designation is established through an analogy: this practice is free from all faults, just as that infant lacks any conceptual discrimination; hence it is called 'infant practice'. Such are the names and meanings.
