> "How is it that the arising of arising cannot be spoken of?" cites the question regarding the second; below, it explains its characteristics, using the previous mark of arising to refute the subsequent arising of dharmas, showing that it cannot be spoken of. "Because of the arising of arising, it arises" explains the prior bringing forth the subsequent: the first word "arising" cites the mark of arising; the next word "arising" explains that the previous mark of arising can give rise to all dharmas; "therefore it arises" reveals that those dharmas can only begin to arise because they are produced by the mark. "Because of the arising of arising, it does not arise" uses the prior to refute the subsequent: because conditioned dharmas only obtain arising through being produced by that mark, they have no fixed nature of arising; hence it says "does not arise." "Cannot be spoken of" means that because it does not arise, one cannot speak of arising. Alternatively, both the prior and subsequent arisings can be simultaneously refuted: "Because of the arising of arising, it arises" refutes the prior arising; the prior one is the arising of the mark, and because it gives rise to all dharmas it is spoken of as arising, but its own essence is not arising; and "not arising, therefore does not arise" refutes the subsequent arising; the subsequent one is the arising of a dharma, and because it is produced by another it is spoken of as arising, but its own essence is not arising. "Cannot be spoken of" means that both the prior and subsequent arisings cannot be spoken of.
