- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [8.21](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1764.8.21)

> Next, it applies \[the similes\]; the text specifically has five parts: First, the word "perilous" illustrates the correct path attained by buddhas and bodhisattvas, corresponding to the precipitous and steep places in the first section. Second, the section from "the monkey illustrates ordinary beings" downward corresponds to the second section; previously it was said: "In the places where both man and monkey can go, the hunter places sticky pitch upon the block"; hence it is now applied. The monkey illustrates ordinary beings, the hunter illustrates Māra, and the sticky pitch illustrates the sensory realm of greed and desire. Because the text is brief, it only says it illustrates greed. Third, the section from "places where neither man nor monkey can go" downward re-applies the first section. Fourth, the section from "ordinary people are bound by the five desires" downward corresponds to the third section, where every touch is stuck and none can be freed. Fifth, the section from "causing Māra Pāpīyān to lead them away at will" downward corresponds to the fourth section, where it is pierced with a staff and carried back; first it applies and then glosses it.
