> Next, upholding the precepts is explained: first a question, next the explanation, and then the overall conclusion. Within the explanation, it first abandons the faults of ordinary people, next abandons \[those of\] the Hīnayāna, and finally cultivates the Mahāyāna. Within abandoning the faults of ordinary people, there are three distinct clauses: first, abandoning the fault of ordinary people's divergent seeking—upholding the restrictive precepts "not for the sake of birth in the heavens, nor out of fear"; second, abandoning the fault of non-Buddhist mistaken precepts—"not receiving the dog precept, the cock precept, the ox precept," and so forth; third, abandoning the fault of ordinary people transgressing and violating—not violating the four grave offenses is called "not breaking the precepts," avoiding the preliminary stages of grave offenses is called "not breaching the precepts," not committing minor faults is called "not blemishing the precepts," and avoiding the preliminary stages of minor offenses is called "not corrupting the precepts"; these abandon the faults of ordinary people. Not seeking the lesser fruit is termed "not practicing the precepts of the śrāvaka"; this clause clarifies abandoning the faults of the Hīnayāna. Below, the cultivation of the great is explained: "receiving the śīla precepts" is the expedient means of training in the precepts; "attaining completion without arrogance" means that when the precepts are perfected, one is free from marks.
