> Second, from "My feelings were not" downward, gives the immediate cause for composing the commentary. Although he later succeeded in returning alive to Mount Tiantai, because the two previous occasions for listening and contemplating had both been lost, he yearned for the Dharma unceasingly. He further sought other commentaries to verify the sutra's purport, but since their interpretations contradicted the sutra, he composed his own commentary. The "old commentaries" refer to the preserved interpretive treatises of various masters such as those of Hexi and Guangzhai. "Not matching the text" means straying from the scripture and missing the purport. Yang-yang (with the fanqie yu-liang) means disheartened and discontented. "Troubled by them": zhu means zhi ("them"). Seeing that their interpretations were wrong was like suffering an illness oneself; this was the immediate cause for composing the commentary.
